When I was 15 I got a Saturday job in the local chemist shop. This gave me money to finally buy my own things. I worked there until I left school and we moved to the north of the city.
When I was 17 I got a summer job as a housemaid at Torloisk House in Mull. I worked there for two summers. It was very interesting. The first year there was no electricity and we used candles for lights at night. It was like going back in time. This is now a holiday home and I would love to go there with the family one day.
Another summer as a student I worked in the Pickering & Ingles warehouse.
P & I, as it was known, was a Christian bookshop in St Vincent Street. It later became Wesley Owen and in 2012 became part of the Faith Mission Bookshops group, which is still trading in the premises.
During the Christmas holidays in my student days I worked in the Post Office. The work varied between the sorting office in George Square, and out with the postman delivering mail.
