Bellahouston

The first church I remember going to was Bellahouston Parish Church of Scotland when we lived in Ibrox. We were taken to Sunday School every week. I also joined the Brownies for a few years but gave up when I was old enough for the Guides.

I do remember being interested, but did not get many answers. See my testimony for more details of my faith journey.

After becoming a Christian at age 17 I taught in the Sunday School at Bellahouston. A couple of years later I left and went to Harper Memorial Baptist Church. This church had been built as a memorial to John Harper who had been the pastor in the church in the area and had died in the Titanic tragedy in 1912.

Harper Memorial

Harper memorial Baptist Church was where my friend Beatrice was a member. I had already been attending the evening services while I was still at Bellahouston so it was an easy transition to go in the mornings too. There was a very active Youth Fellowship with lots of people my age and I loved it. The minister was Peter Donald and I learned a lot from his teaching.

Gordon and I were married in Harper by Peter Donald.

After a couple of years we decided to join a house church in Pollokshields which was run by Don MacAuley. He was a great teacher and we believed the house church model was sound. However, after David was born we soon realised that we wanted a different church environment for our children, so after much thought and discussion we settled in Greenview Evangelical Church in Glasgow. This was quite a change from the Church of Scotland background we both had!

Greenview

Greenview was a ‘Brethren’ church and it was all very new to us. There was no minister and the teaching was from the elders and visiting speakers. We enjoyed the communion service where members of the congregation took part by giving out a hymn, a Bible reading or a prayer. We were among genuine Christians who were there because they believed, not because of tradition. This was in 1981 and we have stayed in that style of church ever since.

When we moved to East Kilbride in 1982 we went to the nearest ‘Brethren’ church which was Threshold Gospel Hall.

In early 1986 we moved to Westwoodhill Evangelical Church which had been founded by members of Threshold. This is where we have brought up all our children and we are still members to this day. This is our church home.
